D-Day was so immense an event that an introduction to it has to embody subject-limiting choices. Historian Dan van der Vat in D-Day [BKL O 1 03] decided to emphasize the postinvasion combat in Normandy, particularly the Canadian role in it. Gilbert structures his short survey around this concept: the Allies' fear of failure and what they did to ensure success of the initial landings. The actual fighting, then, treated in a vast specialty and popular literature, assumes a secondary place. Gilbert dispenses first with the first strategy the British considered, which was to avoid invading France altogether and to attack the Nazi empire instead through Norway and/or the Balkans. Pressed by Roosevelt and Stalin to give up this peripheral strategy, Churchill sanctioned the cross-Channel attack, and Gilbert describes the two years of preparation in its two most crucial respects: the build-up of men and material, and the stratagems to deceive the Germans about the location of the landings. Backed by two dozen maps, Gilbert's sturdy presentation provides the big picture for readers new to D-Day on its sixtieth anniversary. Gilbert Taylor

Filled with hints and excellent "best practices" on software patterns, this book will be nearly indispensable for anyone who wants to become an expert at Java design. While there are a good many available books on software patterns, this is one of the few that concentrate on reusable software designs specifically geared toward the Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), a popular option for Web applications today. The authors have catalogued several dozen J2EE patterns garnered from Sun Microsystems and online resources.

The tendency for any book on software patterns is to dissolve into software engineering jargon, and you'd expect this title to do the same given the abstract names for many patterns listed in its early sections (for example, "Intercepting Filter," "View Helper," and "Service-to-Worker" are hardly catchy names). While the authors do provide the "official" UML and pattern descriptions for these J2EE patterns, the real surprise is that they use a handful of longer case studies to show off each pattern in action. First there is a hotel booking application to show off Web tier patterns. Next comes an excellent case study on persistence patterns used to simplify working with EJBs and databases. Patterns for improving performance and scalability are illustrated with a travel booking application.

This review is for the audio edition. Hank doesn't exactly cover himself with glory in The Case of the Haystack Kitties. He's his usual hasty, conceited self for most of the book, starting with one of his amazing leaps to a completely false conclusion when talking with Drover. In case you think cottonwood trees aren't real, they are. We have them in my part of Arizona, too. Those seeds do look like cotton.Slim Chance, the Lopers' slovenly, lazy hired hand, has been ordered to take some feed to the cattle. Slim takes Hank along, which leads to a lesson for Slim and danger for Hank (not to mention a cameo appearance by my favorite buzzards, Wallace and Junior). Part of the aftermath of that danger made me wince with disgust.The haystack kitties are a skinny stray cat, Gertie, and her six kittens. The kittens are old enough to have their eyes open, but not old enough to hunt. Hank is very hard-hearted toward the plight of the 'squatters' as he calls them. He wants them off his ranch, a sentiment heartily endorsed by Pete the Barncat. Gertie is a timid, polite cat, but don't even THINK of hurting her kittens.Crash, a bull, has been knocking down the fence to get at the feed. Slim sets Hank to guard the pen from Crash. Gertie is worried about her kittens if that bull gets in again.Hank does get to redeem himself at the end, of course. As for the songs, I don't agree that Slim's was boring, as Hank claimed, but Slim did get in a few snarks about a dog. Hank's song about kitties may have accurately reflected his feelings about cats, but he shouldn't have sung it to Gertie's kittens.Hank the Cowdog is great fun, but this time he definitely takes a backseat to Gertie.Note: I think the name Slim drops and Hank mangles is "Barney Oldfield," an American racer who, according to Wikipedia, was the first man to drive 60 miles an hour (96.560 64 kilometers). Luckily for me, my late dad knew who he was back in pre-Internet days so I didn't have to wait until I could get to the library to look him up. (I was reading a Doc Savage reprint and Doc had instructed his driver to do a Barney Oldfield.)

As the title would suggest, in this story Hank, Head of Ranch Security, gets involved with a mommy cat and her litter of kittens he has found invading "his" ranch. Well you know how Hank feels about cats...goodness knows he has told us enough times and his feeling are no different in this case.Ah, but there is a very mean bull involved which is tearing down fences and destroying they hay bales and hank is tied to the fence by Slim so that Hank can guard both hay and fence. Tied up with a bunch of kittens...good grief! Of course we all know down deep what a softy Hank is and in this one he most certainly shows his true colors.We are not only treated to the convoluted conversations between Hank and Drover in this one, but we have a very strange cat thrown into the mix and it is hilarious.Like all the Hank books, this one is a great family read and is a great book to give to the reluctant reader.This was a library find.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks
